RESEARCH:

The primary manipulation in this experiment is the variation in the intensity of grazing among nine fields, each approximately 300 Ha in area. Two fields will grazed for 70% utilization, 1 for 57% utilization, 1 for 45%, 1 for 32%, 1 for 20% and 3 will remain ungrazed as controls. This is structure of a Generalized Linear Mixed Model experimental design (Fitzmaurice et al 2004. Applied Longitudinal Analysis. John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken, N.J; please download study design.pdf for more details).

Within this experiment, numerous research projects are possible, and some of them are currently being conducted. Currently, Dr. Nicola Koper of the University of Manitoba and her graduate students are studying the effect of varying levels of grazing intensity on the population dynamics of the grassland songbird population.

In addition, projects to directly measure the effect of grazing intensity on insect dynamics or structure, vegetation community structure, small mammal abundance, and the like are envisioned and awaiting partnerships.
